Demeter, Forsaken Soy Wax Melts - for home fragrancing!
Sheaves of golden hay, honeyed chrysanthemums, & fading sunflowers haunted by a haze of brimstone & hellfire
I have always adored the myth of Persephone, but as I get older, I find myself more drawn to her mother, Demeter, goddess of the harvest & agriculture. Specifically, I've been thinking about that heart rending moment when we, as parents, have to let our children manage their own lives. I have a pet reinterpretation that Persephone realizes that she's been sold to Hades by her father Zeus, & eats the pomegranate on purpose, becoming queen of the underworld & making Hades life figurative as well as literal hell. Demeter is horrified at Persephone's situation & desperately wants to fix it all for her, but knows in her heart of hearts that Persephone has it covered & can deal with things on her own terms. So, each autumn, she takes Persephone to the gates of the underworld, tells her to write if she needs anything (knowing that she won't), & watches as her daughter steps from the light into the dark for another season.
Demeter, Forsaken is the scent of the shining fields as Demeter slowly drives her chariot home, heart aching & wreathed with autumn flowers, trailing a sulphurous wisp of hellfire.
