Cups were passed around, someone adding a slosh of peach schnapps, another a squirt of orange juice, vodka appearing from thin air, and before long the wholesome facade of the working season was stripped away, along with unnecessary glasses, clumsy work boots, tiresome clothing... The witches, stripped naked, kneaded scented shea into each other's skin and, with some amount of giggling anticipation, chanted the seductive words to invite power back to the island shores. The flames rose, bodies moved, someone threw sandalwood chips into the fire, & pulses quickened. The power, it was coming. Coming, coming, coming. It was almost there, sliding luminous over the waves & up the still-warm sand, coiling up quivering legs & parting bare thighs.

On the darkened dock of the mainland, the ferry pilot sat leaning back in an old kitchen chair, watching the flickering point of orange light far out near the black horizon, bit her lip, & shivered.
